Her One Life 2025: A Solo Journey to End the Silence on Liver Cancer
Liver cancer claims lives across Africa not because it’s incurable, but because it’s diagnosed too late. Her One Life, an initiative pioneered by Dr. Sanju Sobnach and colleagues at Groote Schuur Hospital (Cape Town), tackles this crisis head-on by combining awareness, education, and human connection.
The Mission
In 2025, a 23-year survivor (now 50)—one of the longest-living liver cancer survivors in Africa—will embark on a solo journey across the continent, mirroring the isolating road faced by patients after diagnosis. Traveling from South Africa northward, she will:
-
Educate communities on early symptoms and Hepatitis B vaccination (a leading cause of liver cancer).
-
Engage families and medical staff to share survivor stories and reduce stigma.
-
Partner with local clinics to amplify screening access.
-
Document the raw, unfiltered reality of life with liver cancer—the fear, resilience, and hope.
Why This Matters
-
1 in 3 liver cancer patients in Africa die due to late diagnosis (WHO).
-
Hepatitis B vaccination can prevent 80% of cases—yet access remains limited.
-
Survivor-led advocacy breaks barriers in communities where cancer is taboo.
